Cacao Berry Smoothie Bowl_3

One of my favorite, quick breakfasts to make at home is a green smoothie bowl topped with fresh fruit and when I really want to indulge I mix it up with raw cacao for a rich, chocolatey flavor. I also throw in a variety of other superfoods that are jam-packed with nutrients including avocado, which creates a thick, creamy consistency like chocolate pudding, then I top it off with berries, hemp seed, cacao nibs and coconut flakes. The combo of the chocolate flavor and berries is a match-made in heaven! This is definitely not the smoothie bowl to eat daily but every now and then, it’s a great choice if you want to load up on nutrients while also appeasing your sweet tooth!

Here’s a breakdown of the nutritious value in each superfood ingredient in this smoothie bowl:

Cacao Powder & Cacao Nibs
Unlike cocoa and chocolate which have been processed to reduce bitterness and are filled with toxins, raw cacao, is incredibly high in antioxidants, iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamin C, amino acids and flavanoids which are known to help lower blood pressure.

Avocado
High in potassium and Vitamin E, avocados are also a greet source of healthy fats. They’re also high in Vitamin K,  potassium and extremely high in fiber. Avocados have more fiber content than any other fruit which can help aid weight loss and speed up metabolism.

Spinach
This leafy green is loaded with high amounts of vitamins A, D and E in addition to being a great source of iron. It also contains double the daily requirement for vitamin K which helps enhance cardiovascular health.

Blueberries
Blueberries are high in soluble fiber, flavonoids and phytonutrients. They’re know to help reduce bad cholesterol and enhance brain memory.

Strawberries
Strawberries are packed with fiber, folate, potassium and vitamin C, which boosts immunity, helps repair the bodies tissues and is a powerful antioxidant. They have also been known to provide protection against certain types of cancers and reduce inflammation of the joints.

Hemp Seeds
A great addition to a salad, yogurt or your smoothie bowl, hemp seeds are a rich source of omega-3 and omega-6 fats. They also have high fiber content and are high in magnesium – a mineral that helps the body regulate blood pressure, maintain strong bones and can lower risk of heart disease.

CACAO BERRY SUPERFOOD SMOOTHIE BOWL

Serves 1-2

INGREDIENTS
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup of your favorite nut milk (I used cashew milk)
1 heaping tablespoon of raw cacao powder (I use this one)
1 heaping handful of spinach
1/2 of an avocado
A scoop of your favorite protein powder (I use Tera’s Whey Bourbon Vanilla Whey Powder)

TOPPINGS
Hemp seeds
Cacao nibs
Coconut flakes

PREPARATION
Blend together in a high-speed blender until smooth and creamy. Top with berries then sprinkle on hemp seeds, cacao nibs and coconut flakes. Enjoy!
