An Epic Staircase Gallery Wall by Phillip Mitchell Design at the Kips Bay Showhouse

One of the most fabulous features of the Kips Bay Showhouse was the spiral staircase winding up the 5-story mansion which Toronto designer Philip Mitchell transformed into what might be the most stunning and epic gallery of art I’ve ever seen. The walls were covered in a beautiful, soft gray “Torridon” toile wallcovering from Mulberry that served as the perfect backdrop for hundreds of pieces of art, many from Philip’s own collection and others, donated works from galleries and artists that includes paintings, etchings, photography and more. I love that many of the pieces were incredibly high-end while others were inexpensive flea market finds. It was a beautifully curated mix. I instantly fell in love with this space but I loved it even more when I heard the back story behind it which I learned from an Instagram post by my friend, designer Young Huh. She wrote:

There are those special moments when you immediately connect to someone upon meeting them. Such was the case when I met @philipmitchelldesign. Ever since he was a young boy, he visited @kbshowhouse with his mother. One day, you’ll be in the show house she said. Philip’s mother passed away 2 years ago but he made sure she was a part of his space by installing toile wallpaper, which was her favorite. Philip actually doesn’t like toile much, but he found a way to make it his own while paying homage to his mother. I have always said you can feel love in design and you will most certainly feel it in Phillip’s space. @archdigest.com
